Dutch Students visit the Department
The Department currently has two Dutch exchange students visiting us - Brigit van Horen and Laura van Coenen. Both would like to introduce themselves to staff and students.

I'm Brigit van Horen and I tend to say that I'm from Holland, but that's not quite true anymore. My nationality is Dutch, but I actually live just 5km across the border in Germany and have one so for about three and a half years now.

I'm here on my placement in York Hospital with my classmate Laura van Coenen. We will be here for about 12 weeks. Back at home in Holland, we study Nursing in Arnhem. We are in our 3rd year, of 4, and in that year we get the chance to do an internship abroad. We could have gone to Germany, but that would've been in mental health. Laura and I preferred a hospital, so we chose to go to York!

We are staying on the campus, both of us in James College. I'm in Block N, a bit of an older building but the room is all right, at least for the time I'm here. It's nice to live on a campus, for once in my life. In Holland we don't have these kinds of campuses. The country is a lot smaller, so the distances are smaller too. If the distance is too long to travel, students just go and live in the city where they study.

On the 16th of February we started at our placement in York Hospital. There was a lot to get used to, and there sti ll is. The team is very nice, so that makes everything a bit easier to deal with. I think it will be a very nice ti me here in York!

Two weeks ago we were asked why we, people from Holland, call ourselves ‘Dutch' and not ‘Hollanders' or ‘Netherlanders'. I read it somewhere, someti me, but I forgot.
So for you, and myself, I will hereby try to explain, but it might be a bit complicated. The word Dutch is derived from ‘diet', an old Dutch word, that means ‘people'. Dietsch or Duutsch means ‘the language of the people' and it was a normal language instead of the fancy languages like Latin or Greek.
In the middle ages there were a lot of changes in the area which is now The Netherlands and Germany, where they spoke the language Duutsch. We, the Dutch, started to speak ‘Nederlands'. It's actually because of the English, the word ‘Dutch' still exists. In those days they kept calling our language and the people Duutsch, now Dutch. So there you have it. Hopefully you all understand it better, or at least a little, haha!

I am Laura van Coenen and I am from the Netherlands. I am currently in my third year in my training to become a nurse. Unfortunately in Holland the training takes 4 years instead of 3 and I don't even get a degree, just a diploma. We don't really have degrees. But I won't explain the whole school system or I would probably need another 5 pages.

I'm here in York for 12 weeks as a part of my training, together with Brigit. We will be working at the hospital of York during that period. We started 2 weeks ago and so far I really like it. I've never worked in a hospital before so everything is new to me, which is sometimes scary.

I was surprised at how kind and helpful the people are here. Not only in the hospital but, well just everywhere I go. Whenever you ask a stranger something in Holland, you usually just get a weird look back. Here people actually try to help you, although sometimes it's difficult because they can't understand my mixed English/Dutch sentences ( I sometimes don't even understand
myself.)

Anyway, I already feel like I've learned a lot and I hope I will learn a lot more in the coming weeks! Maybe I´ll see you around.
